Walnut Valley Men's Chorus Makes Their Debut at Winfield
Winfield, Kansas...Over the years, the Walnut Valley Festival has been the host to music that ranges from a cappella to Symphony, with a whole bunch of good, down home, bluegrass and acoustic music in the middle. This year the Walnut Valley Men's Chorus will be bringing "barbershop bluegrass" to Walnut Valley. The Walnut Valley Men's Chorus is a group of Cowley County area men, whose purpose is to share fellowship through singing.
The idea for the Walnut Valley Men's Chorus was first conceived in early 2000 by men who had prior experience in singing barbershop style music. The first rehearsal was attended by about twelve men. In the nearly two years since that time, the membership roster has grown to include over 40 men from Winfield and surrounding towns.
While barbershop music was the main focus of the first rehearsals, the chorus quickly expanded their interest to include other types of music as well, including gospel, spirituals, hymn arrangements, and classical folk music. The variety expands to include seasonal music at holiday time.
The Walnut Valley Men's Chorus presents a formal concert in April. In addition, they provide entertainment for groups and organizations, throughout the year, often as many as five to seven times per month. They have performed for a variety of occasions, including Special Olympics, sporting events, area community functions, church services, service organizations, and area retirement homes. Several quartets have been formed from within the group to provide entertainment on their own.
Walnut Valley Men's Chorus director, Keith Anglemyer has been busy working out musical arrangements that he feels are appropriate for the fans at the Walnut Valley Festival. Word on the street has them doing very innovative versions of some more widely known tunes you would not expect from a men's chorus.
The Walnut Valley Men's Chorus will be a part of the Sunday morning music on stage 3. They will be performing gospel music at their morning performance. On Sunday afternoon the Chorus will present their style of traditional and bluegrass music on stage one. The men will be performing a cappella on a number of songs, and later joined on stage by members of the Walnut River String Band who will be providing instrumentation for the chorus.
Membership in the Walnut Valley Men's Chorus is open to men of any age who enjoy singing and performing music. If you are interested in finding out more information about The Walnut Valley Men's Chorus, contact Keith Anglemyer, by calling 620-221-2159 (evenings only), or by e-mail wvmc@cox.net.
