| bio |
Its always cold in January, especially after being rejected. Jeff Russell and Andrew Hix, sophomores at Buhler High School at the time, were good friends trying to score some chicks to like them. Many miserable attempts, and many miserable failures. The key to getting women: acoustic guitars. So Jeff and Andrew set off in hope of writing the songs to make the girls scream! The first Claiming Haley practice was held in Andrew's basement in late January with Andrew and Jeff singing acoustic songs about girls, school and anything else in their hearts. The acoustic thing got old quick and Ben Bettis was added on the beats and so was distortion. Giving up the acoustic life the boys set out for a sound similar to Taking Back Sunday meets Matchbook Romance. A few shows later summer rolled around and Claiming Haley had near 7 local shows underneath their belts. But two guitars and drums can't get you far, so Doug Jackson, a local kid who spends countless hours on Playstation 2 was added for the deep end. Claiming Haley was now a complete band.
After a summer of playing local shows and trips to Independence and Winfield, Claiming Haley wanted to lay down the music they made. Dallas S. Schmitz was a popular recorder in Kansas with previously recorded Kansas greats EMR and My Friend Tim. The first Claiming Haley EP was released as "Scootin' Along".
Summer came to end and Ben moved to Chicago and Doug left to go to school. Two Hutchinson kids named Matt Drozweiler and Jackson Graham had been attending the local shows and were big fans of Claiming Haley. Matt was put in on bass and Jackson in on drums. Matt later quit, by James Gitchell, who quit too. Then Brandon came to fill in the void.
The Claiming Haley family is getting bigger every day of the year. If you don't see them at the show you can check them out on the sides of the streets. Keep it real and check out a show sometime.
